Semiconductor boom: Samsung builds a new plant
The smartphones business has recently been rather sluggish, So now Samsung is investing heavily in another sector. The Group is building a semiconductor plant in South Korea at a cost of 11.6 billion dollars.
The site is to be as big as 110 football fields: The world's largest chip manufacturer Samsung wants to strengthen its market position and is building a plant at a cost of 11.6 billion dollars. The proposed facility will help to strengthen its competitiveness and "cover the growing demand for advanced semiconductor products", said Samsung. The plant is to be constructed on an area of 790,000 square metres in an industrial complex in the province of Kyonggi. Construction is due to start in the first half of 2015. Production is scheduled to begin two years later. Samsung already operates two larger chip factories in Kyonggi as well as in China and the United States.
According to Samsung, it is still unclear whether the focus will be on the production of pure memory chips or logic chips. The latter not only store information, but also process it.
